Legume
(Onobrychis vicifolia )

A very useful legume that can produce good quantities of quality forage. Difficult to establish in the northern part of the country and can be slow to get going. Often sown with less competitive companion grasses

Uses

Grazing/Silage/Hay

Sowing Rate

35kgs/acre - 85kgs/ha

Persistence

4 Years

Sowing Period

April to August

Yield Potential

10-15t DM per ha.

Management

It must only be grown on suitable free-draining soil with a pH above 6. It should be sown on a heavy seed rate as a large seed and combined with less competitive grasses so it is not shaded out. It can take a year to become established so must be treated delicately in the first season.

Additional Info

Sainfoin contains tannins which lead to better protein absorption and less greenhouse gases such as methane being released from the animal.
