Stubble turnips are a very economical fast growing catch crop. They can be grown on a wide range of soil types with a target pH of 6.5 although they are more robust against acidity than other brassica options. Often grown straight after cereals but can be a higher yielding choice sown midsummer where they will reach their full potential in 12-14 weeks. The fertiliser should all go into the seedbed with a top dressing of nitrogen applied if necessary. Ideally suited to sheep grazing where it should be strip grazed to ensure they clean up the crop and don’t waste any of the valuable bulbs.
